Asiko Afrobeat Ensemble is an all-original contemporary Afrobeat band led by a master of the craft, Foly Kolade. They carry on in the tradition of classic afrobeat, highlife and juju while infusing the music with their own distinct contemporary take. In his songwriting, Foly draws upon his Yoruba culture, his experience growing up in Nigeria through the 80’s and his story of immigration to create deep groove music that is meant for dancing and celebrating while at the same time shining a light on important issues and stories of our time.
Since forming in Toronto in 2011, Asiko Afrobeat Ensemble quickly established a record of uplifting big audiences. They have opened for Seun Kuti and have shared bills with Femi Kuti, Antibalas, Zap Mama, Buffy St Marie, Aline Morales, Cheick Diabate, Madagascar Slim and Awa Sangho. They have also featured at Afrofest, Toronto Jazz Festival, Small World Music Festival, Guelph Jazz Festival, Habari Festival, Uma Nota and Koerner Hall among others. Asiko Afrobeat Ensemble’s live show draws audiences to move along with a high-energy spectacle featuring a killer 7+ person band, dance, costume and heavy percussion. |
